The following programs were presented for our 2015 meetings:

  • January 9, 2015 -- Cynthia Cowen, Licensed Massage Therapist
  • Cynthia Cowen, LMT, has lived and worked in the Tallahassee community since the summer of 2000. She has happily followed a totally plant-based diet for 42 years and raised her daughter (now 27 years of age) this way since birth. In order to feel confident in doing so, she studied vegetarian nutrition and dietetics, receiving 19 credits in 1989 from the Miami-Dade College Vegetarian Studies Program, at their Environmental Center.

Learning about the environmental benefits of eating more in the plant-based direction had a major impact on Cynthia, as vibrant health and compassion for animals were the only reasons she was previously aware of to follow this way of life. In 1990, she became the coordinator of that same Vegetarian Studies Program until 1996. Then, she became director of the newly formed Miami chapter of EarthSave, which raised awareness about the direct relationship of food choices to environmental consequences. She also ran EarthSave’s Healthy School Lunch program, teaching students of all ages about the power of food choices in helping our planet heal.

Since losing her mother to a combination of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes and her father to prostate cancer and multiple myeloma, Cynthia recently became certified as a Food For Life instructor from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). She is dedicated to teaching people what whole foods, plant-based eating can do to prevent and reverse so many of the degenerative diseases of our times. Founded by Neal Barnard, M.D. in 1985, PCRM is a research-based educational organization located in Washington, D.C. FFL classes teach people how to eat for weight management, cancer survival, diabetes recovery, and just plain good nutrition. There is also an employee wellness program.

Cynthia wants to make these classes available all over Tallahassee and will present a brief overview in hopes of inspiring members to make use of the information for themselves and/or their loved ones. “I can’t believe we come into this world to be sick!”

Cynthia can be reached at (850) 264-9145.

  • Febuary 10, 2015 -- Licia Berry, Author, Artist, Guide, Healer:
“Extraordinary Power — Healing a Traumatic Brain Injury with The Mind... and Shamanism”
  • Licia will share the story of the rehabilitation and healing of her son’s traumatic brain injury last year. On March 24, 2013, Jess Berry suffered an impact of 30 miles per hour to his right temporal lobe, fracturing his skull in two places and resulting in an epidural hematoma, requiring brain surgery to save his life. After he was medically stable, the next question was whether their gifted son would still have his mind. She and his father are ecstatic to report that Jess is back in school, making all A’s and working part time, living on his own…and has released his fear of math! He insists he is better than he was before the brain injury! This will be Licia’s first talk about how together she, her son, and a partnership with multi-dimensional support healed her son.

Licia Berry is a veteran educator with a 25+ year career spanning public schools, state departments, and non-profit, corporate, and private sectors. A multi-dimensional communicator, she started a private practice in Asheville, NC in 2001 and turned it into a global online teaching practice and business in 2004, when her family began a 7-year spiritual odyssey (http://berrytrip.us). Her study in psychology, quantum mechanics, neuroscience, psycho-neuro-immunology, shamanism, systems theory, energy dynamics, and creative arts has informed her work to expand the use of our whole brains and with the power of the mind. Licia offers several opportunities for discovery, insight, and leadership through workshops, classes, tele-groups, retreats, and private sessions internationally. Called a “Healer of Healers” and “The Woman’s Guide to the Frontier Inside,” she currently resides in Tallahassee with her family.

  • April 14, 2015 -- Margie Kalaluhi @ Heart Centered Wellness
  • The LifeLine Technique™ is the fusion of science and spirit. It incorporates the traditions of natural healing, the Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine, modern science, and the new frontier of energy medicine or energy healing into one easily accessible system. Sessions utilizing The LifeLine Technique™ awaken you to the root cause of the painful, scary, or stressful experiences that manifest as symptoms such as physical pain, stress, or anxiety. Coupled with the Five Basics of Optimal Health, which are the five acts of self-love: water, food, rest, exercise and owning your own power, you are able to create the best possible conditions for the body to be a self-healing organism. It can be utilized by everyone looking to live a conscious life and transform the quality of their health. Ultimately, the more we become conscious as a result of sessions with the LifeLine Technique™, the more we are able to create an attractor field that empowers us to live an intentional, healthy, and passionate life.

During Margie’s April presentation, she will explain The LifeLine Technique™, and she will do a group Lifeline session. The practice is entirely non-invasive and encompasses several holistic modalities into one condensed session. Margie will walk us through the steps of the program using a flow chart and muscle testing (applied kinesiology), along with the healing frequency of the words “Infinite love and gratitude.” The muscle reflex testing will demonstrate some of how the subconscious mind works. The LifeLine Technique™ works on the subconscious where beliefs and perceptions are held. This process helps to release unwanted patterns that no longer serve us. She determines your positive intention and then harmonizes and reprograms every cell in your body to mirror your intention, so you can consciously attract the desired outcome to you.

  • May 12, 2015 -- N. Elizabeth Markovich, FNP-C, DNP
  • Family Nurse Practitioner ARNP, Doctor of Nursing Practice

Is Hormone Therapy the Fountain of Youth or Toxic and Unnatural Poison?

Hormones systems are complex, and interact with each other. These include the sex hormones, thyroid, and adrenals along with blood sugar balance and some gut related hormones. Imbalance in one system tends to cause trouble in the other areas. The “sex” hormones have many functions. Along with controlling sperm production in men, and the release of the egg and menstrual cycle in women, they also influence moods and emotions, buffer inflammation, and influence tissue integrity. These functions can help prevent and treat degenerative conditions, arteriosclerosis, memory loss, bone loss, and influence inflammatory conditions… under the right circumstances.

Elizabeth Markovich, at Integrative Healthcare, provides primary care for anyone ages 12 and over and consultations for younger children, with a holistic and functional medicine approach. Services include physical exams, wellness care, and treatment for acute and chronic problems using: prescriptions, diet and lifestyle changes, natural hormone therapy, stress reduction modalities, and supplements. Elizabeth also uses 1) Natural, bio-identical hormone replacement creams and troches and BioTe hormone pellet implants, 2) Prolo-therapy injections for joint pain and to aid joint and tendon repair, and she uses 3) Eleven outside laboratories to find the cause of illness, including testing for food allergies, digestive problems, chronic infections such as Lyme disease, and adrenal function. Functional Medicine focuses on finding and treating body imbalances and the root causes of illness.

  • June 9, 2015 -- Lynn Dolson
  • Transformational Medicine

Dr. Lynn Dolson will discuss an evolving paradigm of healthcare and her experiences with its practical applications.

Dr. Dolson is a pathologist, turned alternative / integrative medicine physician. She has accumulated over 20 years of training (so far) in many different alternative paradigms and is a Bioenergetic practitioner. Her understanding of disease spans the physical with Western medicine, to the structural with Applied Kinesiology, CranioSacral therapy, Myofascial Interlink and Osteopathic medicine, to the energetic with Medical Acupuncture, Biomagnetic Therapy and herbal medicine, to the biochemical with nutrition and Autonomic Response testing, and the vibrational with homeopathy, hypnosis, and insight. Only the body heals itself, and it naturally tends to health. Dr. Dolson assists by removing barriers and helping address the root cause. Health is a side effect of personal alignment and purpose. Ultimately, disease is seen as an opportunity for transformation.

  • July 14, 2015 -- Roy Abarbanel, PT
  • Certified in Orthopedic Manual Therapy, Personal Fitness Trainer

The art and science of healing is renewed with each treatment. Therapists are vital to establish methods to resolve dis-ease and create awareness and personal control within the patient. We will discuss methods of reaching through the injured person’s resistance, guarding, and protection to create a patient/therapist bond. Myofascial Release is used extensively early in the process. The patient usually needs assistance to establish the flow of bio-energy and awareness into injured, painful areas. Once the body begins to lower its defenses and allows meaningful movement, aggressive physical modalities can be used. Examples are: sensorimotor awareness strategies, Muscle Energy, Total Motion Release, and strength and flexibility exercises. As the body becomes receptive to re-entry into its normal world of action, more involved strengthening and conditioning programs can begin.

  • August 11, 2015 -- Diane Gold
  • Our guest speaker will be Dr. Diane Gold, Licensed Acupuncture Physician and Certified Qigong Instructor. (See Diane Gold’s Member Page.)

Dr. Gold’s topic will be: Pain, Stress, Anxiety, and Depression: How Ancient Wisdom Can Treat Modern Ailments. It’s pretty easy to see how pain, stress, anxiety, and depression are some of the most common, and often the most costly, complaints physicians treat in patients. We’ll explore how Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help patients to overcome these conditions and get back on track to vibrant health and a fulfilling life.

  • September 8, 2015 -- Leslie Hanks' Yoga Unlimited Presents PanchaKarma at Home
  • PanchaKarma is the foundational program of Ayurveda, the Science of Self-Healing. This beautiful, intelligent process reawakens the basic intelligence of the body to heal itself. We are our own best healers when the body/mind has an opportunity to renew and reset. To do this we first re-awaken our own intuition with Pancha – 5 Cleansings – Karma.

This is a simple process which we can all do twice a year, at the change of the seasons, Fall and Spring. Come and learn each of the 5 steps, kitchari – mild pure food, diuretic herbal tea, swedena – steam bath, abyhanga – oil massage, and oleation – mild laxative.

In discussing this program with a student, she volunteered that she might not want to live a long, extended life because old people are not venerated in this culture: IT’S UP TO US TO BECOME MORE VENERABLE AS WE AGE! All of the long-standing spiritual traditions have a version of renewal and rejuvenation, Lent for Catholics, Passover for Judaism, Ramadan for Muslims, with PanchaKarma for Yoga. It’s a wonderful, nourishing tradition to learn and to share.

  • November 10, 2015 -- Threshold Choir
  • Our November presenters will be members of The Tallahassee Area Threshold Choir, which brings comfort through song to those facing the challenges of living and dying. The choir is made up of women with compassionate voices who offer the gift of song at tender times. They sing for people in the midst of suffering, healing, loss, grief, or death. When invited, they send one to four singers to offer soft, restful songs in short sessions designed to soothe, comfort, and bring peace. They sing in private homes, care facilities, and hospitals.

Susan Smith, Lora Silvanima, Laura Dunway, and Rosanne Gernasi, who are members of the Threshold Choir, will talk about what they do, sing a few sample songs, and then demonstrate their process to volunteers, one at a time, in a reclining chair. People in the audience will get an idea of the service that is performed by the choir, including the variety of songs offered. The evening will end with a Q & A discussion.
